I had previously done promotional product work with Fox Sports Radio, which is what The GOAT (Gainesville Ocala All Talk) was previously. I met then manager Deborah Smith and owner Don DePew. We created a working relationship in regards to promotional products and I became Facebook friends with Deb & Don.
In late 2017 or early 2018, based off of social media posts alone I can assume, Deb asked if I would be interested in hosting a radio show. I gave a resounding “No”. I had never done anything like that and despite wat most people think, I tend to not want to be in the direct spot light. If you’ve ever worked with Deb, you’ll know she is very convincing and persistent, some might even say pernicious (kidding), and eventually had me agreeing to a three month stint on the condition that I get to choose the time and my co-host. My obvious decision was someone that was also completely inept at public speaking and lacking in couth and intelligence, so enter in Matt. I knew that despite our experience, if we had each other to play off of, we would eventually get something that was half listenable. We’ve been friends for over two decades so we can communicate pretty fluidly.
I struggled with coming up with a name for a while and then finally came up with a name that I thought was defensive enough to work for someone that had no experience in the field “Unwanted Opinions”. If someone complained about what I had to say, I had a built in excuse, our opinion is unwanted, it’s in the name.
After the three month stint, Matt and I packed up our belongings, gave a final on-air sign-off, and left the station. About two hours afterward I got a call from Deb asking what was going on and why we said our goodbyes, I explained that we’d fulfilled our three months and that was that. About two hours afterward I got a call from Deb asking what was going on and why we said our goodbyes, I explained that we’d fulfilled our three months and that was that. That’s when she explained that one of her advertisers really enjoyed the show and wanted to keep us on air…enter in, TOUCHDOWN GROUP! Trey Adams and The Touchdown Group, “for all your commercial and residential lawn, pool, and cleaning needs!” along with Deb are the reasons Unwanted Opinions stayed on the air and grew for the next few years. Not long into having the show I realized I wanted a third person to “fact check” for the show. Believe it or not, it’s hard to check your own facts while keeping a show moving and there is a lot of opinion that gets thrown around as fact and we didn’t want to be one of those shows, despite coining the phrase “opinions are facts!”, so we petitioned for a fact checker for quite some time. Finally, we were cleared and that’s when Jesse James joined the show as official Fact Checker!
We had a solid run on air until Covid came knocking. In late 2020 the station ultimately sold and the show was cancelled. There were talks of a podcast for awhile but the timing never seemed right. We had a solid run on air until Covid came knocking. In late 2020 the station ultimately sold and the show was cancelled. There were talks of a podcast for awhile but the timing never seemed right. After enough requests from friends and listeners, in 2021 we contracted for a spot with Workspace Collective and have been back in full swing as a “Once a week, one hour, live show” broadcasting on Facebook live and uploading the live recording on Podcast hosts like Apple and Spotify! Since the switch we’ve added producer Dave Miller from Maven Photo, as well as a weekly “Person on the Couch” that joins us for the last segment of the show to talk about whatever nonsensical topics of the week.
